Powers: Matthew has no true power, but he displays an uncanny empathy at times.

Learned skills: He is a trained sword fighter in the Immortal tradition, carrying a sword with him at all times when away from home. His preferred weapon is a broadsword, although he has an appreciation of knives and bo staff, the influence of his adopted mother.

He has a small tattoo on his left shoulder blade of the I Ching Tri-gram Chen, which stands for Thunder and the desire for achievement.

Born Sept 28, 1792 in Denmark. An orphan, he first died at age twenty-seven in an accident on his adoptive parents farm. After coming back to life, he was taken in by a 350 year old Immortal named Thaddeus Paine, an Englishman who traveled quite a bit. Thaddeus trained him in swordplay, but Matthew didn't care for Game, and so became a disappoint to Thaddeus and they eventually parted company after 25 years. He went on to spend time with Methos and several other Immortals, where he honed his skills.

He ended up in Paris around 1895 where he met Charlotte and Thomas Ashcroft. He'd never met any other 'Immortal types' and was surprised that they existed. He was persuaded to join them and became a member of their family, finding purpose and a life in their activities. When Thomas joined the Legacy in 1908, he also joined.
